Psychologist for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
If you are experiencing symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), understanding the various psychological treatment options available can help you find the right support. At True North Psychology, our team of psychologists offer individualised assessments and evidence-based treatments to help individuals manage OCD effectively.
What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterised by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily life.
Obsessions: Intrusive and distressing thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety or discomfort. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, harming yourself or others, doubts about relationships, something being 'not quite right', and paedophilia.
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. Examples include excessive cleaning, checking, counting, the need for symmetry or order, repeating words/phrases and/or seeking reassurance.
Around 3% of Australians experience OCD, with symptoms typically emerging by age 19 (ABS, 2022). Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
How Psychology Can Help People with OCD
Psychological therapies are essential in the treatment of OCD, providing individuals with strategies to manage symptoms and enhance their daily functioning.
A form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) has the strongest evidence base for supporting people living with OCD. Exposure and Response Prevention involves finding alternative emotional, cognitive, and behavioural strategies to cope with anxiety, without engaging in avoidance or compulsive behaviours.
Creating a Personalised Treatment Plan
At True North Psychology, we believe in an individually tailored approach to OCD treatment. After your initial assessment, we will create a personalised treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and goals.
-
Combination of therapies: Integrating evidence based psychological therapies, including cognitive and behavioural skills-based interventions (i.e., ERP) and medication review if appropriate.
-
Regular review and follow-ups: Monitoring progress towards your goals and making necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
A personalised treatment plan ensures that all aspects of OCD are addressed, leading to more effective management and improved quality of life.
OCD and Medication
Medication can be an important part of the treatment plan for many individuals with OCD, when used in conjunction with psychotherapy. Medications are designed to help manage symptoms and improve overall functioning, and you can discuss this option with our GP Psychotherapist.
-
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) - SSRIs are first-line therapy and have the most evidence for OCD. Serotonin is an important chemical messenger between nerve cells. A rise in serotonin levels leads to more frequent and efficient cellular communication. By targeting various parts of the brain - especially the amygdala, which is a key processing centre for anxiety - SSRIs can decrease the symptoms of OCD.
-
Serotonin-Noradreline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) - These work in a similar way as SSRIs, except that they also increase levels of another chemical messenger called noradrenaline. There is some evidence for their role in OCD treatment, though not as much as there is for SSRIs, hence they are not recommended as first-line therapy.
-
Tricyclic Antidepressant (TCA) can be effective in OCD when SSRIs and/or SNRIs have not been successful. However there may be a number of side effects that must be considered.
Because of the unique and pervasive nature of how OCD affects a person’s thinking, people often need slightly higher doses of medication than are used in anxiety or depression.
Medication is most effective when combined with other therapeutic approaches, such as CBT and ERP. Regular monitoring with your regular GP can ensure the best outcome.
